Campgrounds filling up as rally approaches

STURGIS, S.D. — In just a little over a week the 80th Sturgis Rally will kick off.
Both the Sturgis RV Park and the Buffalo Chip are hot spots for bikers to camp out during the rally.
As the 80th rally comes up the campgrounds are expecting hundreds and even thousands of guests.
Back in the spring, many of those reservations were uncertain due to the coronavirus.
“We were full since August 20 of last year. We have had some openings due to border closings. Canada can’t get here, Australia can’t get here,” says Sturgis RV Park owner, Gina Huiet.
“Reservations got a little slow at about march sixth and they have been picking up progressively and they’re really quite good right at the moment,” adds Buffalo Chip owner, Rod Woodruff.
With the virus some campgrounds are adjusting for restaurants, bars, and public showers.
“People gather. I mean it will be less this year. Less hours, less tables in the bar, just like the guidelines say,” says Huiet.
The Chip says that they’re adding a few new events this year, and according to the owner they’re one of the few venues in the nation that hasn’t canceled their concerts.
The Chip is expecting thousands of people to camp out during the rally.
Woodruff says, “you have all these folks that you see in these campers come in here so we have four/five thousand campers.”
Both campgrounds also provide tent camping areas along with sites for RV’s and campers.
The Sturgis RV Park also provides cabins on site.
