Opera House in Spearfish giving away art kits to encourage creativity among youth
SPEARFISH, S.D. — In Spearfish, The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center staying engaged with the local community while they limit social events by bringing arts and crafts to the children.
For the second year in a row, The Opera House is giving out Matthews creativity bags. Every two weeks in the summer, The Opera House team plans to work together to develop and gather materials for the kits.
The kits include the basic materials for for the project, and online The Opera House posts instructional videos as well as skill levels for parents.
“We want to make sure that we can have art and culture available for all ages, so the youth factor is just huge for us,” said Kyler Flock, the Community Engagement Manager of The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center. “So, whether it’s a COVID-19 year or not, we want to have children in our gallery, kinda showing them at a young age; all the positivity that can come out of arts and crafts, and just sort of finding that creative side, and so regardless of what’s going on in the world, we’re always gonna try to have some youth involvement.”
The craft days are usually held at The Opera House, but have been turned into take home projects. Around 50 bags are made, and not surprisingly, the turnout has been great as it is an opportunity to keep kids entertained and productive.
If you missed out on this weekends craft day, the craft pickups will be held every other Saturday until July 25.
